This piece summarizes Elinor Ostrom’s key principles from Governing the Commons below.
E.O principles to more effectively govern commons:
- clear boundaries
- explicit rules
- effective monitoring
- graduated sanctions for violators
- mechanisms for conflict resolution
- broad participation in governance
- autonomy from higher level authorities
What might be missing?
From E.O’s book, a framework that resonated with me that I do not see here is the structure between Appropriators and Producers. She writes, in Governing the Commons: "I use the term producer to refer to anyone who actually constructs, repairs, or takes actions that ensure the long term sustenance of the resource system itself. All appropriators benefit from maintenance performed on an irrigation canal, a bridge, or a computer system whether they contribute or not"
